What are the timeframes?

Hungry Jack's is the fast food franchise of the Burger King Corporation. As one of Australia's most well-known fast-food restaurants, Hungry Jack employs about 17,000 people, generating revenue upwards of $1 billion.

Are you seeking employment at Hungry Jack's? Hungry Jacks offer different positions, ranging from kitchen porter to crew member to restaurant manager.

You should know that these different job roles have various entry requirements. Hence, you must check the job requirements on Hungry Jack's website to ensure you meet the minimum standards.

However, for some roles at Hungry Jack's, you must pass a police check and other background checks as part of the recruitment process.

What is a police check?

A police check is used to uncover the applicant's criminal history, including charges, matters awaiting court hearings, court convictions, findings of guilt, court offences, good behaviour bonds, and other court orders. In Australia, a police check is formally referred to as a nationally coordinated criminal history check.

Why would you need a police check for Hungry Jacks employment?

Fast food chains like Hungry Jack's often require job applicants to undergo a police check as part of the employment process to ensure that they are hiring individuals who do not have a history of criminal activity that could pose a risk to other employees or customers.

A police check is a way for an employer to verify an individual's disclosable criminal history. It provides information about prior convictions or charges that may be relevant to the job, such as theft, violence, or drug offences. This can help the employer determine whether or not an applicant is suitable for the position and make a more informed decision about whether to hire them.

Additionally, some roles, such as those that involve handling money or working with vulnerable populations, may have specific legal or regulatory requirements mandating that employees undergo a police check.

It's also worth noting that fast food chains like Hungry Jack's are handling food, and to maintain food safety, it's crucial to conduct a background check on their employees. This is to ensure that all employees have a clean criminal history and are suitable to handle food and interact with customers.

How to get a police check

The Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission (ACIC) is responsible for coordinating police checks in Australia. However, ACIC partners with police agencies and accredited bodies across Australia to make the police checking service accessible. Australian National Character Check (ANCC) is one of Australia's most prominent ACIC-accredited agencies.

Do you need a police check for employment at Hungry Jack's? Follow these steps to secure a police check:

Step 1: Apply

You can apply for the police check through an ACIC-accredited body or a police agency. To get started, you must fill out the online form with your full name, date of birth, address, and purpose of the check. You also need to upload four identification documents, including:

  • ✔ One commencement of ID document
  • ✔ One primary use in community document
  • ✔ Two secondary use in community documents
  • ✔ A biometric link to confirm your identity

You must also pay the associated application fee.

Step 2: Processing

After applying, the police agency or accredited body first confirms your identity. Then they send your application details to the National Police Checking Service Support System (NSS), ACIC's IT database.

This IT system runs a name-matching algorithm to identify a potential match based on the applicant's details. If there is no possible match, the system automatically returns a 'no disclosable court outcome (NDCO)'. However, if the system finds one, it sends it to the relevant police agency(s) for manual verification. If the police agency(s) confirms that the match is invalid, they return an NDCO to the body requesting the check. Conversely, a valid match goes through the vetting process, where the relevant spent convictions scheme is used to determine which criminal records are releasable. The final result is sent to the body requesting the check on the applicant's behalf.

Step 3: Obtain the result

The police agency or accredited body notifies you once the police check outcome is ready.
