What are the timeframes?

Melbourne Hospital (formally referred to as the Royal Melbourne Hospital - RMH) is one of Australia's leading public hospitals, reputed as a major teaching hospital and world-class clinical research institute. Melbourne Health manages the RMH and other health-related organisations, including North Dialysis Service and North Western Mental Health.

These organisations offer various job opportunities in clinical and non-clinical roles, including doctors, nurses, Allied Health professionals, administrative staff and support staff. Asides from having the right educational qualifications, you may also need a practising licence for particular roles.

A nationally coordinated criminal history check (NCCHC) may be required in the recruitment process to ensure the safety of both staff and patients.

What is a police check?

A police check is a background check to verify an individual's criminal record. It provides information about a person's disclosable criminal history, including convictions, charges or pending charges. A nationally coordinated criminal history check (NCCHC) is the official name for the police check provided by ANCC.

Why do you need a police check for Melbourne Hospital and Health employment?

Police checks are often required for Melbourne Health & Hospital employment to ensure the safety and well-being of patients, staff, and other stakeholders. Melbourne Health & Hospital is a primary public healthcare provider and as such, it has a responsibility to provide high-quality care to its patients. The organisation also has a duty of care to its employees and patients, ensuring that they work in a safe and secure environment.

In some cases, police checks are mandatory for specific healthcare roles. By conducting these checks, the hospital can demonstrate its commitment to the safety and well-being of its patients, staff and other stakeholders.

How to get a police check?

If you're looking to get into Melbourne's healthcare industry, you may need a police check. ACIC works with accredited bodies and police agencies to make the police checking service accessible in Australia.

Here are the steps to get a police check:

Step 1: Apply

For a police check, submit your application through an accredited body like Australian National Character Check (ANCC). You can also apply through a police agency. In the application process, you'll fill out an online form with your name, address, DOB, and other details. You'll also upload four identification documents. They are:

  • ✔ One commencement of ID document
  • ✔ One primary use in the community document
  • ✔ Two secondary use in the community documents
  • ✔ A biometric link that links the applicant to the claimed identity

Various suppliers have different rates. For example, a police check with ANCC costs $52.90 + GST as the base cost.

Step 2: Processing

After you apply for a police check in Victoria (VIC), the police checking provider (accredited body or police agency) verifies that your details and identification documents are valid. Afterwards, they forward your application to the National Police Checking Service Support System.

It runs a name-matching algorithm to pull a potential criminal match from its vast databases. In most instances, the system doesn't find one and returns a 'no disclosable court outcome (NDCO)' to the requesting body. If it does find a match, the system forwards it to the police agency in the appropriate jurisdictions for manual verification.

Here, the police agency confirms that those highlighted criminal records accurately belong to the applicant. Once that's sorted out, the police agencies determine which criminal records are disclosable per the spent convictions legislation. After that, the final police check result is returned to the requesting body.

Step 3: Get the result

The provider will generally notify you once your police check result is available.
