Guaranteed to be valid Australia wide

A nationally coordinated criminal history check is valid in all States and Territories of Australia.

What are the timeframes?

70 percent of police checks are returned to applicants within 24 hours. Results are emailed on the same day they are received. Approximately 30 percent of checks may be referred to one or more police agencies and can take longer than 10 business days to be returned, due to the manual nature of this process.

A ‘potential match’ may be found if the applicant shares similar details with other individuals recorded in police systems, particularly if they have a common name. Processing of a check in these instances can take longer to progress.

What is a police check / NCCHC certificate?

The Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check often shortened to (NCCHC) displays the disclosable criminal history of an applicant.

The disclosable criminal history is known as the Disclosable Court Outcomes (DCOs) of the individual.

How can I interpret the results?

The results provided on a check will outline whether the applicant has No Disclosable Court Outcomes (NDCO) or Disclosable Court Outcomes (DCO):

  • NDCO means there is:
    • no police information held against the applicant
    • no police information that can be released according to the purpose and category of the police check, and the application of relevant spent convictions legislations and/or information release policies.
  • DCO means there is:
    • police information that can be released.

Does a NCCHC relate to the role?

Yes, police check results are related to the role the person has applied for. For example, a police check for rideshare driver purposes differs from that for shopkeepers, and so on.

What offences show up on the NCCHC?

Offences are disclosed in accordance with the spent convictions scheme and information release policies. The police are responsible for applying the information release policies. A Rideshare Driver’s Police Check for example may contain the following offences if they are present in the candidate’s history;

A check result with a DCO may list the following police information:

  • charges
  • court convictions, including penalties and sentences
  • findings of guilt with no conviction
  • court appearances
  • good behaviour bonds or other court orders
  • matters awaiting court hearing
  • warrants and/or warnings
  • traffic offences.

Can I be allowed on a Rideshare Platform if I fail my NCCHC?

Legislation or HR policies will influence the platform’s decision on weather or not to allow an individual access to their platform.

So, whether despicable court outcomes on a police check will affect your chances on the rideshare platform will depend on;

Is a police check the final check for Rideshare drivers?

Not always. Background checks are usually subject to the discretion of your platform or organisation. Although most employers consider the NCCHC as a valid means of vetting their candidates, it is not usually the final check.

Depending on the role or the industry involved, the applicant may need additional checks specific to the role.

More often than not, the rideshare platform may require you to provide other relevant checks like;

  • Reference Check,
  • Medical History Check

Does a police check (NCCHC) for rideshare drivers expire?

The NCCHC result is a point-in-time check that remains valid from the point of issue.

The NCCHC only carries the updated result of the candidate up until the point they are issued and there is no explicit expiry date on them.

The validity of a NCCHC depends on the internal risk management of the platform or the employer. Usually most employers will not accept police checks older than 3 months, while others set a maximum threshold of 6 months for the age of NCCHC result they receive.
