What are the timeframes?

Uber Eats launched in Australia in 2016 and has grown to become an essential service in Australian life. How? Uber currently provides employment opportunities for over 59,000 people in Australia. Aside from the employment opportunity, Uber Eats offers several pros, like being your boss and working flexible hours.

However, managing a large operation like Uber Eats is challenging, considering the various operational risks involved. Uber Eats conducts rigorous background checks to address these risks to ensure direct employees and drivers pose no significant risks to customers. One crucial component of this background-checking process is conducting police checks for Uber drivers.

What is a police check?

Formally referred to as a nationally coordinated criminal history check (NCCHC), a police check enumerates the applicant's criminal record, including charges, court convictions, court hearings, traffic offences, findings of guilt, good behaviour bonds, and other court orders.

Why is a police check needed for Uber Eats drivers?

Uber Eats drivers come into contact (direct and indirect) with various members of the community (e.g. customers ordering food). Hence, these drivers must have the integrity to deal with customers with care. An example, a candidate with a misdemeanour of domestic violence may be an unsuitable Uber Eats driver.

Moreover, a candidate with a previous charge of sexual harassment or violent conduct may be suitable to be an Uber Eats driver because of the significant risks they pose to others.

Ultimately, a police check helps food delivery companies - like Uber Eats - reduce their liability. Failure to conduct rigorous background checks may expose them to fines or lawsuits.

How to get a police check for Uber Eats

The Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission (ACIC) coordinates police checks in Australia. Due to the large demand for police checks (about 6 million annually), ACIC works with other accredited bodies and police agencies around the country to make this service accessible. Australian National Character Check (ANCC) is one of Australia's leading accredited bodies.

Are you looking to get a police check for Uber Eats? Here are the steps you can expect in the process:

Step 1: Apply

You can apply for the police check through an accredited ACIC body (like ANCC) or a police agency in Australia. This process is usually online, where you will fill out your name, date of birth, address, and purpose of the check. You'll also upload four identification documents.

  • a) One (1) Commencement of ID document
  • b) One (1) Primary Use in the Community Document
  • c) Two (2) Secondary Uses in the Community Documents
  • d) A biometric link to confirm your identity

You must also pay the application fee. ACIC-accredited bodies charge different rates. For example, ANCC charges a base fee of $52.90 + GST per police check. Prices of police checks can vary depending on the provider.

Step 2: Processing

After applying, the police agency or accredited body first confirms your identity through your documents. Then they forward your application to the National Police Checking Service Support System (NSS).

If the system finds no match, it instantly returns a 'No disclosable court outcome (NDCO)' to the police agency or accredited body that submitted the check. Conversely, if it finds a match, it sends the application details to the relevant police agency(s) for further assessment. If the police agency(s) determines that the match is invalid, they also return an NDCO. But if the match is valid, they vet the check result.

In the vetting process, the police agency(s) applies the relevant spent convictions legislation to determine which criminal records are disclosable before sending the final result to the body that requested the check.

Step 3: Get the result.

Once the ACIC-accredited body or police agency receives the police check result, they notify you.
