The Working with Children Check and a Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check are two different checks. A Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check - formally referred to as a nationally coordinated criminal history check (NCCHC) - reveals an applicant's criminal record - including arrest warrants, finding of guilts, court convictions, police cautions, sexual-related offences and other disclosable offences.
Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Checks are a necessary precaution to ensure the safety of children and this can be achieved by:
✔ Identifying unsuitable applicantsIndividuals with a criminal track record of violence are not suited to work with children. With a Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check (also called a background check), identifying and filtering such individuals from the hiring process may become possible.
Children are vulnerable and sexual assaults can have severe negative psychological impacts. Hence, it's vital that childcare workers are not registered sex offenders or even have a criminal record of a sexual offence. A Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check can provide this information, helping HR managers make informed decisions.
Here are the steps for obtaining a nationally coordinated criminal history check:
Step 1: ApplyYou can apply for an NCCHC through an accredited ACIC body or police agency. You can complete an application online by filling in the form, uploading the necessary documents, and paying the associated fee.
Asides from filling in your info like name, alias, date of birth, and address, you must also state the purpose of the check. You must make clear that you need the check as a childcare worker to ensure that all relevant criminal records (if any) are in the check result.

Step 2: ProcessingAfter submitting your application, the accredited body or police agency verifies your identity. Afterwards, they send your application to the National Police Checking Service, ACIC's IT system that runs a name-matching algorithm to pull out a person's criminal record.
If a potential match is generated during this stage, it is sent to the relevant police agency for further assessment. A 'No disclosable court outcome' is returned if the match isn't valid. For a match, a 'disclosable court outcome' is returned. This result is sent to the relevant police agencies for the vetting process. The vetting process applies the pertinent Spent Convictions Scheme and information release policies to determine what offences can be released. Once completed, the final result is sent to the agency that ordered the check on the applicant's behalf.
Step 3: Get the result.Once the accredited body or police agency receives the result, they notify the applicant. ANCC's efficient platform makes it seamless for applicants to track their application in real time, and the result will be automatically sent to your email once it's available.
About 70% of applications are completed within 24 hours. The other 30% are manually processed, which may take up to 15 working days or longer.
✔ How much does a Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check cost?The cost of an NCCHC is dependent on the agency conducting the check. For example, Australian National Character Check (ANCC) offers fast and efficient Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Checks for only $52.90 + GST.
✔ Is a Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check the same as a Working with Children Check (WWCC)?Some people confuse Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Checks with a WWCC. While a Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check gives a list of unspent criminal records, a WWCC is targeted towards assessing the risk of an applicant working with children.
Furthermore, a Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check is a point-in-time check and does not technically expire. On the flip side, a WWCC does expire and has to be renewed after a certain period, typically five years.
